Cryptocurrency: What is it? 

In a nutshell, cryptocurrency is digital money that comes from code. 

Bitcoin, the most popular form of cryptocurrency, is the first successful digital cash system that doesn't have a central entity. This successful system enabled the formation of many cryptocurrencies that exist today. 

In order for digital cash to function there needs to be a payment structure and there needs to be a check on the balances within this payment structure. Instead of one entity checking on balances, cryptocurrencies use a decentralized peer network to do this job. Cryptocurrency uses cryptography to secure a consensus on checks and balances within the system. Cryptography uses math, not individual people, to ensure the balances are correct and safe.  

Cryptocurrency and Diversity 

In the past, many technological jobs have been filled predominately by men. Recently, in particular, by young men.  

However, the world of cryptocurrency is different.

This difference was immediately apparent at an interactive event held at the the Expert DOJO in Santa Monica, California. The event brought an incredibly diverse crowd. Both panelists and attendees were of varied gender, race and age. 

When attendee Talia Bentson was asked if she felt as though the world of cryptocurrency was male-dominated, she responded with a vehement "No." She elaborated, saying, "[cryptocurrency] opens doors up for women." Bentson stopped for a moment and smiled. She explained, "Race, style... those things don't matter." 

Stephanie Tolle, another attendee, nodded in agreement. Tolle works for iPRO Network, a marketing platform. The platform was developed by Pro Currency, a type of cryptocurrency. iPRO Network doesn't sell cryptocurrency, it rewards with cryptocurrency. iPRO Network is aiming for mass adoption, wanting to be incorporated into people's daily lives. The rise in popularity of cryptocurrencies has created an astonishing entrepreneurial environment. Tolle spoke to this saying, "[there's] equally balanced entrepreneurial opportunities for women. It's empowering for women."
